You can't beat a good old fashioned local derby !!

The second round of matches again saw record high scores, but provided no real indicator as to how the season may pan out, although one anomaly was the away performance of ‘Boro’s impressive opponents last week, Old Williamsonians who went down heavily to recently promoted Vigo, whom ‘Boro face in two weeks’ time.
On a pitch that called for running rugby both sides, were not to disappoint, with play crossing both 22’s in the first five minutes as the two packs battled to provide their backs with good clean ball.
The sides traded penalties with Sam Kisbee and Jon Terry showing potential form, before Lewes put together several attacks that saw them move up the field through 12 phases of play that the ‘Boro defence thwarted. From the resulting scrum, and several more pick and drives Lewes eventually crossed the ‘Boro goal line to record the first converted try of the afternoon. 3-10
It was ‘Boro who had the next opportunity to score when Callum Main latched onto a dropped Lewes pass, resulting in a ‘Boro lineout five metres out from the line, but ‘Boro could not sustain the momentum and gave away a penalty allowing Lewes to clear their line. However man of the match Alex Purnell then finished off a strong ‘Boro attack , with a well taken try, although the kick was pulled wide by Sam Kisbee. 8-10
With the momentum in Crowborough’s favour, Gary Steven followed up a long ‘Boro clearance and caught the Lewes #15 who was attempting to run out of defence. With the pack in full charge Tom West released Sam Kisbee who missed the centre pairing to Tom Boddy , and with the fast arriving Josh Groocock on his inside the pass and score under the posts was a formality. Sam Kisbee’s conversion took the score to 15-10.
As half time arrived, Connor Hand, got into the act, showing that he is fast understanding the versatility needed in the role of the back three, when he moved off his left wing on an arcing run, and in creating the extra man took the inside pass off right wing Connor Hand to score in the corner. The kick was pulled by Sam Kisbee, bringing the half to an end 20-10. HT
Within four minutes of the restart Lewes had pulled back 7 points with a well taken converted try through the centre, before ‘Boro made it a six point game once more through a Sam Kisbee penalty. 23-17
However Lewes were not going to lie down and after a spate of poor ‘Boro tackling gifted them the lead with two quick well taken converted tries 23-31.
With still fifteen minutes left and only eight points in it ‘Boro set about reducing the deficit. With Connor Hand once more in the mix he hefted an over-head pass to Gary Stevens who juggled his way around the last defender before dotting the ball down in the corner for the fourth bonus point try . Once more the kick was pulled leaving the game at a tantalising 28-31 needing a penalty to level the match.
But Crowborough seemingly do not take the easy route, and having seen off one prop and a second carrying an injury the distinct possibility of uncontested scrums was not what ‘Boro would want, so when the penalty was awarded ‘Boro opted for the scrum some fifteen metres out. With the Lewes scrum back peddling it was Callum Main who picked up and crossed the chalk only for the official to indicate the ball held up.
Boyed by the previous scrum Crowborough once more prepared for the drive against the tiring Lewes eight, and as the ball came in, the shove came on, the Lewes front row predictable buckled, allowing Freddie Purnell to pick up at the back and cross the line for a Sam Kisbee converted final score. 35-31
With the remainder of the squad inflicting a 65-29 defeat over Cinque Ports with Harrison Chapman for the second week running voted MOM, and the “Crows” running out the victors, 21 - 47 at East Grinstead it was a ‘Boro clean sweep .
The next two weeks see Crowborough on the road travelling first to league leaders Pulborough, before their trip the following week to impressive second placed Vigo.
