Our Referee today was Surrey's - James Auty.
On a lovely afternoon in January, the Crow's second-string side put on a Brilliant Performance in front of a sizeable crowd at Steel Cross. With Captain and Team Manager Keith Brooker side-lined due to Work, Cormac Kelsey took on the responsibility of taking this side out onto what can only be described as a very soft pitch, (Idea for forwards Rugby).
From the start the forward's took early control of the game and push the team deep into Hastings & Bexhill's 22, without much success early on, however the score board started to move when Hastings & Bexhill infringed giving away two quick penalties, just inside their 22. James Hart, playing at full back stepped-up to slot them both between the upright’s, 3 - 0 & then 6 - 0. Further pressure continued on the Hastings defence line and a clear off-side was punished by the referee. James Hart stepped up again to score 9 – 0.
This score line sparked the opposition into life and the Hastings & Bexhill forwards wanted to bring their `A` game to the party and from the restarted Kick-off, and an advantage played by the referee for a knock-on and then an outside gave the H & B Number #10 his first chance of the afternoon. 9 – 3.
Borough now took full control of the proceedings and with a quick tap and go, 5 metres out, which wasn’t going to stop Benny Martyn in full flow, James Hart then took the extra’s 16 – 3 , and with half time approaching following a scrum on the H & B 22, Cormac Kelsey pop-up from the blindside with a short sprint to line to score his try, out wide. This was the last action of the day for Cormac, as he was injured during the dash for the line. The conversion was unfortunately missed by James Hart.
The Half time score was 21 – 3.
