Positives, despite the scoreline

It may seem strange to be talking positively about a match that ended in heavy defeat, but the scoreline masked a very gutsy performance.
Low on numbers we borrowed 2 of the U14s to bolster the troops and Will Bentley and Ellis Benyon were stars of a great team effort. Ben Maxwell found himself moved from No8 to second row to prop before kick off and did a sterling job, despite breaking out in a nose bleed at the first scrum!
After the early exchanges where Shoreham scored first, there was a great, well worked team try for Crowborough, straight off the training ground resulting in Will Bentley going over in the corner. A superb touch-line conversion from Jonte levelled the score at 7-7 after 10 minutes.
It was one-way traffic on the scoreboard after that but the Crowborough players did not give up with, to a man, massive efforts going in, including a remarkable tackle by the smallest man on the pitch - Ellis - on probably the biggest, quickest man on the pitch, one of the two giant Shoreham wingers as the image above shows. The other Benyon, Hudson - making his debut in CRFC colours - was ruthless in the tackle all match long.
In the second half the performance was much better with some strong hard running lines from the forwards, competitive rucking and some bad luck to miss out on a couple of tries of our own. Joseph continued his tradition of stopping games with Shoreham due to injury as his forehead made contact with the boot and spilt blood all over himself and his match shirt when he chose to tackle one of the other Shoreham giants with his head! He stopped him!
The team spirit was faultless and the boys will be better for this run out - their first of the season, with Shoreham having had the benefit of a fixture last week to blow away their cobwebs.
