Walking Rugby End of Season

Walking Rugby End of Season

Graham Callard11 Dec 2025 - 14:29

A successful evening

The Walking Rugby season has come to an end at Steel Cross. The cold and damp winter nights, and terrible underfoot conditions are not conducive to having fun. What is fun is to have an end of season drink, some great food, and a quiz. This is exactly what transpired.

No matter that all other activity at Steel Cross had been cancelled due to the weather, Louise and Jacqui, supported by Ryan opened up the clubhouse to the Walking Rugby stalwarts …. who were eagerly expecting a night of … that remains unclear.

19 players attended, and it was great to see a lot of this year’s new intake join us: Alan Jelley , Tracey Coton, Chris Jordan, Graham Parrish , Paul Ayling and Nick Butler. It was particularly good to see Nick who was able to be present having previously thought he would be in a hospital somewhere having one of his upcoming operations. Dedication to the cause. The influx of new players this year , at least 7 of whom couldn’t make the night, has truly added a new dimension to the WR this year. It is great to see both male and female participants on a regular basis. Thanks to them for joining and we hope to see everyone in March next year for the restart.

As always, the food was great , one of Jacqui’s delicious Lasagnas with Garlic Bread and Salad. It wasn’t all food and drink as post meal there was a brief discussion about joining the Sussex league. It should be noted that there is likely to be a get together in January to move the league joining issue along.

Then came the quiz .

Players were probably quite pleased that they had had a few pints as they were asked about the depth of hand dug wells in Sussex, where was William Blake when he wrote about the dark Satanic Mills, and how you could get free Bananas on West Sussex beaches. The winners were the two Davids ( Price and Beale ). It was noted Mr Price won last year too. The Booby Prize, a framed photo of Margaret Thatcher, will be passed on to Alan and Nick for safekeeping.

Mike Berry and James Reading were given early Christmas gifts for their unstinting work in building up Walking Rugby at Steel Cross, making it another success story for the club.

Proceedings ended at 10.15 way beyond some of the attendees usual bedtime!! The general consensus: a great evening.
