Walking Rugby welcome Cranbrook

Walking Rugby welcome Cranbrook

Graham Callard10 Apr - 10:30

A game for all

On a lovely sunny Tuesday evening CRFC Walking Rugby team hosted Cranbrook WR for their first ever competitive fixture.

All in all we had 21 players that allowed us to mix up the teams as the evening progressed.

The freindly fixture was instigated by dual team player Tracey Coton who graced the Cranbrook all ladies team with her speed and enthusiasm which was in evidence from all Cranbrooks' well coached players. Cranbrook scored the first try of the evening with their quick handling and support of their wide runners (walkers actually) creating an early gap for their skipper Rachel to glide through and score. That stung Crowborough into action but poor handling let us down on multiple occasions before 2 tries were scored by CRFC at the end of the first 7 minutes.

Teams were alternated every 7 minutes with CRFC welcoming a new recruit picked up from our Saturday interclub exhibition match, David Barton. He made an immediate impact with his long striding walk soon starting to find gaps in the Cranbrook defense. Given that it was Cranbrooks first competitive game they held up well in defense and their enthusiasm never wavered all evening. As the evening progressed the teams were mixed up and the games opened up with end to end free-flowing walking rugby.

As is now customary the bar then beckoned with a beer and one Jacqui’s excellent pastas, plus much merriment to complete a splendid evening.

Thanks to Peter Morris for refereeing and James Reading for organising the games from the touchline.

Crowborough Squad; Jules Crookes, Alan Jelley , Jim Davies, David Seedhouse, David Barton , David Close, Greg Hilman, James Kay, Chris Jordan, Davis Price, Chris Morgan, Andy Posnett, Simon Davies and Mike Berry.

We plan to visit Cranbrook for a return fixture in 4-8 weeks on a suitable Tuesday evening, but in the meantime Walking Rugby is every Thursday from 6pm to 7pm, all are welcome.
