Well Done Drew !!
Our Referee was Mr Conor Sewell.
On a very heavy pitch with the rain relentless and the persistent cold wind Beckenham and Crowborough served up a pretty enjoyable contest. Crowborough started strongly playing some well constructed rugby with backs and forwards linking well. The large home crowd had little attacking play to cheer in the opening 10 minutes but the home defence kept the now very soggy support interested.
On the 11 minute mark, Beckenham’s first real attack bore fruit. From the set piece an incisive inside pass got players behind Crowborough’s first line of defence. The ball was moved wide with pace leaving the visitors defence floundering and was touched down out wide. Despite kicking into the wind and rain from close to the touch line the extra points were added. 7-0.
The game was now a much more even contest with both sides playing some good rugby only to be thwarted by equally good defence. Connor Hands did split open the home defence but the support was a pace or two too far back and the attack fizzled out when Crowborough infringed at the ensuing ruck. Crowborough were the better side and were rewarded with a James Hart penalty after some excellent forward play taking the visitors within striking distance of the try line. 7-3.
Beckenham’s defence remained rock solid and despite some excellent play by the visitors the scoreboard remained unmoved. With about 30 minutes gone Crowborough decided to take a tap penalty instead of the easy three points from under the posts. The option to go for the try was probably the right one but the execution was poor. Both sides had their moments in the run up to half time but the defensive work by both sides was excellent. Ollie Clinch made a great break but sadly this again came to nothing. The half closed 7-3.
The pitch was now even heavier but both sides continued to play an open running game. It was Beckenham who were now ahead in both possession and territory with their 8, 9 and full back controlling the game well. Crowborough’s tackling was robust and kept the hosts at bay. When Crowborough had the ball Ollie Clinch tried to create space for his supporting forwards with Dave Bennett, Andy Orchard and Callum Main often on his shoulder. All too often the moves came to naught.
As legs tired Crowborough had to work harder to keep Beckenham at bay. Some of the defensive kicking was wayward but in the conditions it would be churlish to criticise. The hosts extended their lead with about 15 minutes to go when Crowborough infringed following a period of concerted pressure. The penalty took the score to 10-3. The visitors with skipper Alex Purnell leading from the front oh so nearly scored late on but with the ball like the proverbial bar of soap it couldn’t be held. A draw would have been a justifiable result but Crowborough should be satisfied with the losing bonus point. Final score 10-3.
In the conditions this was a thoroughly enjoyable game in no small part thanks to the contribution from the man with the whistle. He kept the game flowing as best he could, he was consistent with his decisions and without doubt was worthy of praise from all who endured the weather.
Crowborough now look forward to a string of home fixtures starting with Charlton Park tomorrow. Kick off 14:00.
